Sirigu Murals and Traditional Arts Sirigu

30km off the Bolga-Navrongo Road, murals done mainly by the women of Sirigu await visitors. Women in this village are committed to keeping threatened traditional arts alive. They also sell baskets, pottery, and other crafts, which are both a livelihood and a proud tradition for the villagers.

In 1997 an organization was found by the women in Sirigu known as Women’s Organisation for Pottery and Art (SWOPA) for these reasons:

• To advance the social and economic development of women and their families.
• To increase income from traditional arts.
• To motivate women of all ages to continue the strong artistic traditions of pottery, baskets weaving, and traditional house decorations that have made Sirigu famous.

Purchase pottery, baskets and crafts
Browse and select your purchase from the wide selection of pottery and crafts available in the SWOPA Visitor Centre. Learn the history of the pottery and the symbolism of the patterns used in the art and wall decoration. You may be able to talk with the artists themselves.

Go on a guided tour of area homes. The homes belong to SWOPA members who are keeping the house decoration traditions alive. You will have an opportunity to interact with the women themselves.

You can also tour other points of interest in and around Sirigu, including the Chiefs Palace, Sacred Groves and the Local Market.

If you want to be part of the art, arrangements can be made in advance to work with the SWOPA artist and learn the techniques involved in pottery, baskets, and even wall designs.
